Sustainability

Sustainability for Eastland Generation is about acting in ways that benefit the environment and the communities we operate in, while at the same time creating value for our shareholders.

We will do this by striking the right balance between financial performance, emission reductions, the environment, and the social and cultural wellbeing of our local communities – for the benefit of current and future generations.

Three core commitments

These are our core commitments to achieving a more sustainable Eastland Generation:

 1. BIODIVERSITY.

We will care for the environment by:

  • Targeting the reduction of our highest emissions, which result from operating our geothermal power stations, and supporting the transition to a low carbon future.
  • Enhancing the water quality and biodiversity around our operations and in our communities.

2. PEOPLE.

We will build strong communities by:

  • Developing and maintaining meaningful partnerships with the communities we operate in, and incorporating their concerns and aspirations into our decisions.
  • Providing scholarships, internships, sponsorships and training to improve the availability and depth of technical knowledge and skills in the community.

3. PROSPERITY.

We will create value for our shareholders over the long term by:

  • Delivering renewable energy to Aotearoa.
  • Developing and maintaining a diverse workforce and portfolio of high performing businesses and investments.

Our holistic approach to development

We continue to strengthen ties with our iwi, hapū and industry partners in geothermal projects in the Bay of Plenty, and solar projects in Tairāwhiti and Hawke's Bay.

We work to unlock the value of the land with the owners, while contributing to New Zealand’s renewable energy goals.

Our approach to development means each project is delivered safely and sustainably, respecting cultural values.

“Seeing Te Ahi O Maui completed has long been a vision for me and my whānau. We have a strong connection with the whenua and we are proud that it has been completed without any injury to people or the environment.”

Tomai Fox
Cultural advisor and kaumatua of the Kawerau A8D Ahu Whenua Trust

Environmental initiatives

“Our relationships are crucial to our success in building our asset portfolio and will unlock substantial future value. We carefully consider the land, waterways, flora and fauna, and cultural values during each project.”

Ben Gibson
Strategic Projects Manager, Eastland Generation

Across all our projects, we include practical initiatives to improve the health of waterways running through our sites, and enhance the environment for native fauna and flora.

A shared belief in sustainability

Our approach to sustainability is underpinned by the commitments of our joint owners, Tairāwhiti Investments and Obayashi Corporation.

Tairāwhiti Investments’ sole shareholder, Trust Tairāwhiti, have three waharoa or guiding principles that inform all their decision-making. This includes Kia toitū, sustainability: “Being good ancestors and our obligations to future generations. Children and young people have a better set of opportunities than the current generation.”

Obayashi Corporation’s Sustainability Vision for 2050 is to pursue and promote “the sustainability of the planet, society and people”. To help achieve these targets, they’ve put concrete action plans in place, including decarbonisation targets across all Obayashi sectors; providing valuable spaces and services; and co-creating a sustainable supply chain.
