Eastland Generation operates four geothermal power plants – TOPP2, TOPP1, Te Ahi O Maui, and Geothermal Developments Ltd. Each of these sites is located on the Kawerau Geothermal Reservoir in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
TOPP2
TOPP2 is our newest geothermal power station. We started construction in [month, year] and it was completed and came online in [month, year]. This was our first major geothermal project since Obayashi Corporation acquired a 50% stake in the company in April 2024.
At 49MW, TOPP2 is twice the size of our TOPP1 and Te Ahi O Maui geothermal power stations. It’s enabling us to deliver long-term regional energy capacity and resilience, as well as strong economic outcomes.
“TOPP2 showcases a truly collaborative, equitable partnership with an iwi organisation - one that is playing to our individual and collective strengths and enabling us to both realise our growth aspirations.”
TOPP1
Acquired by Eastland Generation in 2021, TOPP1 is a 24MW binary cycle power plant.
TOPP1 and TOPP2 are a unique partnership between Eastland Generation and Ngāti Tūwharetoa Geothermal Assets (NTGA) wells to generate electricity.
NTGA provides a long-term supply of geothermal heat to the stations, and also manages the wells and steam fields. Land is leased from Ngāti Tūwharetoa Holdings Ltd.
The partnership with NTGA is creating operational synergies across all our geothermal plants. Our long-term geothermal fuel supply agreements enhance plant performance, as well as providing options to collectively develop new power stations in the future.
Te Ahi O Maui
Te Ahi O Maui is a 26MW geothermal power plant on the Kawerau Geothermal Reservoir. It’s a partnership between Eastland Generation and the Kawerau A8D Ahu Whenua Trust, and has been operational since 2018.
Notably, this was the first geothermal power plant that Eastland Generation built from the ground up. The learnings we gained from this are helping to inform our new developments.
Geothermal Developments Limited
Located on the Kawerau Geothermal Reservoir, our Geothermal Developments Limited (GDL) plant is 100% owned by Eastland Generation and generates 9MW of renewable, baseload electricity.
The plant is situated on land owned by the Matata Parish 39A 2A Ahu Whenua Trust and the Matata Parish 39A 2B Ahu Whenua Trust. GDL was commissioned in 2008 and purchased by Eastland Generation in 2010.
In 2013 a new suite of resource consents was issued to allow the plant to continue to operate for up to 35 years.
Transmission assets
Along with our geothermal power plants, we own a number of transmission assets, including overhead 11kV power lines, 33kV transmission lines that connect to the national grid, and the Spencer Ave switch yard.
Report any issues

Community reports
As part of our geothermal operations on the Kawerau Geothermal Reservoir, we publish an annual Community Report to provide the local communities with information on our operations and any significant changes. These reports can be found here:
